The 104 mile distance between Aspen and Crested Butte can literally be chiseled down to eleven miles on foot when you snake your way up along the legendary trail over the 12,480 foot Maroon Pass. Although a beautiful drive along a winding road if you choose that route, the hike is both glorious and unforgettable. Beginning at the most photographed view in Colorado, the Maroon Bells, you’ll wind your way through the White River National Forest where Mother Nature puts on a show of the most vibrant wildflowers in a rainbow of colors. The topography constantly changes with scree and creeks making trekking poles and extra socks a must. Once over the saddle the descent on the other side is a breeze where a well deserved cold beverage awaits. Make sure to pack a lunch and arrange for transportation to get you into town.
